This project is one of five gateway projects for Tourism BC and is a showcase for BC Wood. This 5,100-square-foot, two-storey building is located on an extremely long and narrow highway right of way just north of the Peace Arch Border Crossing. Peeled Douglas fir columns and beams were used to support the large, glass-walled central display hall. A forest of free-standing poles inform visitors about some of the native British Columbia tree species. Sustainable building features include the extensive use of wood in the frame walls, exposed structure, main service counter and custom brochure racks; and the use of an innovative landscaped bioswale to treat surface runoff from the long drive aisle and parking areas. The building awaits final designation as a LEED® Gold project.
