Alberni District Secondary School

The Alberni District Secondary School – a LEED Gold certified building – has a student capacity of 1,000 and includes a 500-seat theatre, two gymnasiums, a fitness room, a dance studio, a First Nations gathering space and a youth health clinic with shared-use community space. Wood was used extensively in construction, including the custom designed wood roof structure for the small gym. It is projected that the new school could save up to 60 per cent on operational costs compared to the former school, due to the use of energy efficient design features such as geothermal heating. Meiklejohn Architects Inc partnered with Atelier Pacific Architecture to design this project.
