A large, light-filled multipurpose area connects the gymnasium, administration and academic areas of Dr Knox Middle School. Clerestory windows in the two-storey classroom area create a light-filled hallway that accesses shops, multipurpose rooms and outdoor work and storage areas. Large sliding ‘barn doors’ close off the academic wing leaving the gymnasium and drama areas available for afterhours use. The building is of cast-in-place concrete through to the second floor, with a roof of structural steel. These materials provide a quiet and safe building structure with substantial thermal mass that reduces temperature variations. Green building features include a ground source geothermal system with reverse flow heat recovery units and motion-sensitive lighting.
