Delta Animal Shelter

2014 - Delta, BC

In January 2012, Delta Municipal Council approved a contract award to Humphrey Construction Ltd working with Meiklejohn Architects Inc for the design-build of a new animal shelter. The site is centrally located at the southwest corner of Tilbury Road and Hopcott Road in Delta, B.C. This winning scheme was selected through a design-build competition from amongst three schemes prepared by teams from the Lower Mainland and the B.C. Interior.

The new 12,000 square foot animal shelter will feature 2 covered dog runs, 18 dog pens, 5 separate cat rooms and sufficient space for small animals, volunteers and staff. The facility will have a separate cat ventilation system to mitigate the spread of airborne illnesses, which are common among cats housed in numbers. The lobby will also feature an area to recognize donations to the shelter. Incorporating a high efficiency heat pump system and solar technology, the animal shelter will meet a silver standard in Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED).
