The new shelter in the industrial area of Nanaimo is a new 7,500 square foot shelter located at 154 Westwood Road on 10 acres of surrounding park, two fenced dog parks, indoor animal washing stations and retail area. It was completed in 2016 and cares for more than 1,300 animals per year. The project presents to the street as a low and sleek building with a raised entry feature clad in local stone. The building design provides direct access to outdoor dog kennels and car room and sound attractive one-story building is comprised of seismically engineered structural streel frame and clad in mix of durable materials including concrete block, stone, corrugated steel cladding, curtainwall and heavy timber accents.
The building is organized in three parts; a high ceiling central administration, storage and maintenance function is flanked by dog and cat wings on either side. Corridors with bright concrete floors and concrete block walls daylit by high clerestory windows. Above it all floats a natural wood ceiling; combining the practicality of durable and cleanable surfaces with the warmth of wood and natural light.
